I have been to New York three times and have visited the Empire State Building each time. The first time was with my family, but I honestly don’t remember it that well. The only thing I really remember was standing in line for HOURS and only staying on the Observatory Deck for a short while.
The second time, I went with my school’s choir for a national competition and we went on the last day of our trip. Our itinerary had us scheduled to go at 9am. The whole trip had been gorgeous weather-wise, and of course this was the day that the fog decided to roll in. We looked up the Empire State building on our approach and couldn’t even see the top through the thick fog. When we got to the Observatory Deck, we could see nothing but whiteness. We were literally standing in a cloud. It was freezing and windy outside, but we went out anyway, just for the experience. Our hair whipped around our faces and I have pictures on my camera from inside the fog cloud. We didn’t stay up long, as it was VERY cold. However, by Murphy’s law, by the time we made it down to ground level, we turned and looked back at the building, and could very clearly see the top of the building. The fog decided to clear up just as we were headed down. But hey, not many people can say the stood inside the densest part of a fog cloud.
The last time I went was October of 2011 with my friend Sarah and my mom. We had come to NYC to see Dan Radcliffe perform on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Our first night in town, we had dinner at Bubba Gumps and had the most entertaining waiter I’ve ever had (too bad he was gay. He was totally hot too). We had intended to go to our hotel after dinner, but instead decided last-minute that we wanted to go to the Empire State building, as weather may not have permitted us to have a good view later on in our trip. This was one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had because I got to look out over the glorious city of New York at night. Every light was shining brightly in the night sky. It was also lots of fun for me and Sarah, as we are both Whovians, and were jokingly checking for Dalekanium in the building plans they display on your way up (there wasn’t any, luckily. No Dalek invasion this time).
